On May 12, 2022, the closing event of the Young Creators Discover 3D project for youth workers and youth educators took place. The event was organized in Kaunas and gathered a full hall of Kaunas Vincas Kudirka Public Library.

30 participants from youth and non-formal education centers, libraries, the center for people with disabilities and schools got acquainted with the aims and results of the project.

Guest speakers were youth workers Ernesta from Ramygala Open Youth Center and Justas and Justinas from Druskininkai Youth Activity Center (JUC). They shared their experience in running 3D and silicone molding workshops for young people.

In Ramygala, a close collaboration was established with a local school. The 3D modeling sessions took place at the school, which has access to a larger number of computers than the youth center. To get acquainted with 3D printing, the students have already come to the youth center, where they could see a 3D printer in action and could print out their own work.

Having become acquainted with 3D technology only through this project, the speakers successfully conducted workshops for young people according to the methodology developed during the project and even tested new possibilities of 3D technology on their own initiative.

The youth of Ramygala compiled and printed a cup for the winners of the local competition “Catch a Song”. Workshop participants also designed and printed keychains.

Youth in Druskininkai printed figurines for the game “Dungeons & Dragons” and started coming to youth center regularly to play this game.

Youth workers also drew attention to the potential difficulties in working with a 3D printer for beginners and shared their suggestions on how to avoid or resolve them.

They encouraged the audience to run these workshops as well, as they are attractive to young people, easy and fun. The silicone part is a nice handicraft, and the overall activity is much more than just working on the computer!

Teachers from Robotikos mokykla then presented the produced methodology, explained the 3D technology principles and demonstrated the project’s website.

After the presentation of the methodology, a practical workshop was held, during which the participants tested the possibilities of the 3D modeling program TinkerCAD. This software is free and available online, very intuitive and suitable for beginners.

Afterwards, armed with aprons and other tools, the participants made silicone molds that can later be used to make chocolate, pastries, soap, or candles.

Some participants of the event immediately expressed their willingness to conduct 3D workshops and were interested in the possibility to borrow a 3D printer from “Robotikos mokykla” for running the activities.

The methodological material of the project is available to all interested parties in the Lithuanian language: https://play.gaminu.eu/course/view.php?id=74 (registration required).

The Young Creators Discover 3D project is co-funded by the European Commission under the Erasmus + program.
